Non-State Torture

London Abused Women's Centre is one of the few agencies in Canada that recognizes Non-State Torture

Non-State Torture (NST) is any act of torture committed for non-political reasons, and that usually takes place in private and personal environments such as your home. It is the term we use to discuss any torture, cruel, degrading, and inhumane acts by an intimate partner, parent, family member, pimp, trafficker, or other persons known to the victim. It is especially present in Sex Trafficking.

The London Abused Women’s Centre supports women who have been subjected to Non-State Torture by an intimate partner or through Sex Trafficking.

Trauma-Informed Counselling

At LAWC, we offer long-term, trauma-informed counselling with Advocate Counsellors who understand the nuances of trauma that come from being a victim of NST. If you have questions about Non-State Torture or want to book an intake appointment to talk to an Advocate Counsellor, please call 519-432-2204.

What is an Intake?

An intake appointment is the first appointment someone has with an Advocate Counsellor at LAWC. In your intake appointment, you will work with your Advocate Counsellor to assess any current safety issues, discuss why you're interested in services at LAWC, and decide if LAWC is right for you. You do not have to share that you are a victim of Non-State Torture while booking your intake if you do not want to.
