16th Annual Shine the Light on Woman Abuse Campaign
Caitlin Jennings, 22, of London was killed by her partner on July 5th, 2023. Caitlin was in and out of shelters as she struggled to permanently end the relationship. People that loved her were concerned he would kill her. Six weeks later, their worst nightmares came true. Her life ended in femicide. Catilin’s father, Dan Jennings, has often spoken throughout his grief and has said, “I want to change the view of Intimate Partner Violence. Victims should not have to hide in shame. There is nothing wrong with asking for help… speaking out takes the power away from the abusers.” The family feels that Caitlin wasn’t heard when she was alive, but they have chosen to be her voice now to share the message that love shouldn’t hurt.
Tiffany Gates was found dead in her boyfriend’s London apartment building on Sept. 7th, 2023. “Too many women are being killed by their significant others, and it almost seems to be the norm. I don’t know what it’s gonna take to change this,” said Tiffany’s mother, Linda Davidson. As a result of her requests for police to release more information on the case and identify the case as a femicide, London police are adopting new approach to combat intimate partner violence and femicide by raising awareness through public education initiatives and collaboration with partners at the municipal, provincial and federal level. The tragic loss of Tiffany has introduced a change for other women in her situation. As London Police Chief, Thai Truong, commented, “We need to prevent intimate partner violence and femicide, but you can't prevent it unless you talk about it.”
Breanna Broadfoot was a protective big sister to Lucas, as well as, his best friend. She is a daughter that her parents think about every day. On July 16th, 2024, Breanna, was only 17 years old when she was stabbed by a former boyfriend and rushed to hospital in super critical condition. Breanna fought as hard as she could before her life was taken from her. Breanna’s heart, liver, lungs, kidney and pancreas gave life to five people.
The family promised Bre they would do all they could to help those in need. They feel strongly that there needs to be more education and resources available, especially for young people. At the media launch for Shine the Lighton Woman Abuse campaign, Breanna’s father, Brett shared, “Please don’t think it can’t happen to someone you love. It can happen to anyone regardless of your economic or social status. Don’t put your head in the sand. We are here today to keep Breanna’s voice heard, because she should still be here.”
Cheryl Sheldon is described as a fierce, strong woman who was a friend to many. She died by femicide in hospital after she was found critically injured by her boyfriend in her apartment on June 22nd, 2024. Cheryl’s family has said that there is a hole in their hearts where she will dwell eternally. They have vowed to never forget her, and neither will we. Cheryl was trying to build a safe life for herself while struggling with homelessness, abuse, and systemic neglect. Cheryl was a woman that was trying to build a safe life for herself through the many challenges so many women face. Femicide takes a woman’s life every 48 hours.
Following the 86 recommendations at the conclusion of the Renfrew County Femicide Inquest, we continue to work to implement some of the recommendations locally by developing a new approach to public education campaigns to promote awareness about IPV, including finding opportunities to reach a wider audience in rural communities. We seek to promote broad recognition of:
· how to engage with support
· identifying risk factors/ warning signs of IPV, trafficking and exploitation
· community and bystander involvement
· information and services being accessible in multiple languages and in multiple formats
· ensuring that rural residents, as well as those that are disproportionally victimized can identify themselves in the messaging and materials
LAWC continues to build on existing age-appropriate education programs for primary and secondary schools, and universities and colleges. Our Shine the Light Educational Resources and Coaching Boys Into Men program focus on violence prevention, recognizing healthy and abusive relationships, identifying subtle indicators of coercive control, understanding risk factors, managing and processing feelings, conflict resolution, in addition to community and bystander obligations.
By collaborating with the Loblaws family of stores we were able to launch the grassroots Ask for Angela program that businesses can participate in where survivors can feel safe and ask for information and contact information to seek services from not only police, but also IPV service providers.
While we work to have an impact, we need you to take action too. Speak to your government representatives. Talk about the issues with your family, friend and colleagues. Go purple for November.
